Vehicle Registration

Updated: Jan 8

Registering your vehicle in Texas is an important step to show intent to live in the state and build your in-state application. You can either register your vehicle online or in-person. This guide will help you through registering online.

Please Note: You should register your vehicle within 30 days of beginning the residency process

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Acquire proof of car insurance

    1. In Texas, you must have insurance coverage for a minimum of $30,000 per injured person, up to a total of $60,000 for everyone injured in an accident, and $25,000 for property damage.

  2. Take your vehicle to a certified vehicle inspection station

  3. Obtain a passing Texas inspection and upload it into your folder

  4. Acquire the following documents:

    1. Vehicle Inspection Report

    2. Proof of Insurance

    3. Proof of Vehicle Ownership

  5. Visit your local country tax-assessors collector office and pay the fee

    1. These include a base registration fee of $50.75 plus additional fees such as the TexasSure insurance verification fee, sales tax-related fees, and the state portion of your vehicle's inspection fee. Counties may add other fees to this cost.

  6. At the office, fill out and complete the Application for Texas Title and/or Registration (Form 130-U)

  7. Ask your customer service representative to sign you up for eReminder

    1. They'll email you when it's time to renew, and you will have the opportunity to renew your registration online.

  8. Upload your vehicle registration proof (plates and car sticker) into your Driver's License folder within your InstateMe Portal
